Lubango - Moçâmedes Railroad (CFM-E.P) has lost over 100 million kwanzas for the last 12 months, with the replacement of vandalised material along its 905 kilometres of track.
The company, with a route that stretches from Namibe to Cuando Cubango, passing through Huila where it has its headquarters, has suffered 30 attacks in that period.
The valuation of metals on the local market, mainly bought by scrap dealers, is the main reason for the theft of spare parts along the line, mainly in the provinces of Namibe and Huila.
Speaking to ANGOP Friday, the CFM Communication and Marketing director, Jacob Hipólito, said that these acts had already caused three train derailments in 2021, however without causing human victims.
According to the source, the damage consisted of the removal of ballast (gravel used to support the line), sabotage of 1,000 metres of fibre optic cable, control desks in some of the 56 stations along the route and theft of nuts and washers to support sleepers.
