Luanda - The National Union of Angolan Workers - Trade Union Confederation (UNTA-CS) on Saturday highlighted the need to review the national minimum wage in order to give citizens more purchasing power.

Among the recommendations that came out of its Sixth Ordinary Congress, with the participation of 315 delegates and held under the slogan "With trade unions work is safer", UNTA-CS highlights the need to find mechanisms to control inflation, as it is an extremely important indicator in the social economic situation and serves as a basis for economic policy action.

The UNTA-CS also intends to put in place pressure mechanisms, in case the objectives are not achieved within the framework of the revision of the General Labour Law currently in progress, as well as to ensure trade union capacity building for leaders and executives with training courses for trainers.

The trade unionists also want the ratification of the requests for membership of the trade unions, with the delegates to the event expressing their discontent with the current economic and social situation of the country.

The delegates propose to the Government to review the percentage of the Labour Income Tax (IRT), reducing it from 25 to 17 per cent, broadening the tax base to sectors that have never contributed.

They called for the creation of working conditions to stimulate business activity and for greater attention to be paid to remuneration policy and the empowerment of entrepreneurs with subsidised financing to increase investment and the creation of new jobs.

The UNTA-CS Congress elected José Joaquim Laurindo as General Secretary, with 184 votes, by direct and secret ballot, for the 2021-2026 term.
