Luanda - The African Union (AU) has provided US$150,000 to support the 56,497 refugees living in Angola, said this Wednesday, the organization's commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Sarah Agbor.

The official  said that at a meeting with refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Republic of Guinea, Chad and Liberia, who live in Viana district, in Luanda.

 

According to the official, the African Union is in solidarity with refugees in Angola, for the difficulties they face.

 

She thanked the Angolan government for the continual provision of assistance to refugees in the national territory.

 

On the other hand, the secretary for the general coordination of refugees in Angola, Kassanga Petronie, said that, right now they are concerned about the lack of birth registration of their children,  access to education, unemployment and the delay in the processes to obtain of asylum.

 

As a result, the Angolan government and the African Union were asked to encourage the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to resettle refugees with special needs.

 

Viana's municipal administrator, Manuel Pimentel, said that support for refugees living in his area of jurisdiction will continue.

 

The visit to Viana refugee center was attended by representatives of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women and the Interior, among other guests.
