Luanda – The food security and the actions of the Angolan Executive to contain the effects of climate change in the south of the country were addressed, on Monday, in New York, during the meeting of the second Commission of the UN General Assembly.

According to a press release to which ANGOP had access on Tuesday, when speaking at the meeting under the theme “Building a sustainable recovery for all”, Angola's permanent representative to the United Nations, Francisco José da Cruz, highlighted the structuring projects to make rural communities in the provinces of Cunene, Huíla and Namibe more resilient.

The diplomat referred to the Cafu project, budgeted at more than US$130 million, which consists of a system for capturing and transferring water from the river to several villages in the province of Cunene, through a 160 km canal, benefiting more than 3.5 million people.

The ambassador also spoke about the National Dialogue on Food Systems, within the scope of the country's Second National Food and Nutritional Security Strategy, with a view to promoting a sustainable food system to eradicate hunger.

Francisco José da Cruz also mentioned that the country joined the Debt Service Suspension Initiative, proposed by the G-20, and negotiated favorable conditions with its main creditors, having managed to postpone the payment of part of it until this year (2023).

Angola's permanent representative to the UN highlighted the partnership with the United States of America, which guaranteed financing of around one billion dollars for the construction of two large-scale photovoltaic solar energy plants.

These are projects that will produce more than 500 megawatts, providing access to clean and renewable energy, to support Angola's energy needs and climate commitments, including 70 percent carbon-free energy generation by 2025.

The diplomat also said that the Executive has adopted investment in human capital and poverty reduction as a priority, having highlighted investments in key sectors, such as Health and Education, Energy and Water, Transport and Public Works, in order to accelerate economic development. and social aspects of Angola.

He also mentioned the implementation of programs such as Kwenda, PREI and PRODESI. The Second Committee is one of the six main committees of the United Nations General Assembly and deals with global economic and financial issues. ANM/ART/TED/DOJ
