Luena - Moxico province is at risk of being cut off from the rest of the country due to the progression of a ravine on the National Road (EN/180) in the municipality of Camanongue, Moxico's main communication route with the rest of the country.

The ravine, situated between the Sapalo and Calei neighborhoods within the town of Camanongue, is located 100 linear meters from the EN180.

The ravine has been progressing for some time, although the initiative to halt it was incorporated in 2019 into the Integrated Plan for Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM), with an allocated budget of 98 million kwanzas. However, the allocation of these funds has not yet been realized.

On Wednesday, the local governor, Ernesto Muangala, visited the site to assess the erosion's progression and expressed his concern. He stated that the Ministry of Public Works has already included the sealing project in the State Budget for the 2025 financial year.

The governor has expressed optimism that, in the coming months, the ravine will be either sealed or addressed, thereby providing residents with the necessary reassurance regarding the stability of their homes, which are located on the periphery of the ravine.

This assurance was provided by the governor, following his efforts to pacify the population of the municipality of Camanongue, which is home to more than 60,000 people.

The municipal administrator, Irene Maquecha, has confirmed that measures are being taken to establish a designated relocation site for the 160 families residing within the high-risk zone. MT/YD/AMP
