Luanda - Social protection in Angola is taking steps towards expansion, analyzing the risks and the people it covers, said Friday in Luanda, the International Labor Organization (ILO) expert Mariana Pereira.

For the expert, the national social protection system began to develop late, since it was not possible to move forward without formalizing the economy more.

Speaking at the end of the three-day training course for journalists on Social Protection, Pereira said the great difficulty often lies in the high level of informality in the Angolan economy.

Mariana Pereira explained that the main aim of the training is to present the social protection systems in Angola, both compulsory and basic, and to get journalists to cover these issues more, as well as to contribute to the debate in the society.

The ILO expert said the message was that social protection is not just for the vulnerable, but for everyone, as it is a human right.

Social protection consists of a set of guarantees offered to citizens to reduce vulnerabilities, weaknesses and risks of a social, political, economic and natural nature that may occur during their lives.

The course for journalists on social protection was attended by 50 professionals in the field.

The training was funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Labour Organisation, in partnership with the  Ministry of Public Administration, Labour and Social Security.
