Luanda – At least 300 million kwanzas were spent in the implementation of the first stage of the Monetary Social Transfer Programme (Kwenda), implemented from May to December this year for the benefit of about 1.6 million families around the country.

The information was given last Friday, in Luanda, by Belarmino Jelembi, general director of the Social Support Fund (FAS), institution that co-ordinates the project, in the end of an assessment meeting of the inter-ministerial commission for the implementation of Kwenda.

The programme covered 23 municipalities countrywide and focused on the distribution of 25,500 kwanzas, every three months, to the most vulnerable families.

The overall budget of the project, financed by the World Bank (WB), is of 320 million US dollars, plus an extra USD 100,000 to be allocated by the Angolan government.

ANGOP has learnt that through the Kwenda project, three social action centres have been created to focus on women’s empowerment, and also 400 technicians and community development agents were trained.

Belarmino Jelembi revealed that the second stage will cover 17 municipalities and is scheduled to kick off in February 2021.

He stressed the need to integrate families in productive initiatives, so that they can maximize the benefits of such social support programme.

The assessment meeting of the inter-ministerial commission for the implementation of Kwenda happened on closed doors, in Luanda, and was chaired by the minister of State for Social Affairs, Carolina Cerqueira.
