Luanda - The Angolan government has said it will continue to work towards an increasingly robust telecommunications and information technology infrastructure, capable of covering and serving the entire national territory.

The statement was made Tuesday by the country’s president João Lourenço at the opening ceremony of the parliamentary year and the delivery of the State of the Nation Address, having emphasized that the challenges of competitiveness imposed by today's world demand the country not to give up.

João Lourenço added that among the infrastructures that cut across and support economic activity, telecommunications and information technology infrastructures occupy an important place, since nowadays, no one can live without them.

The president stressed that work is being done to secure the availability of telecommunications for both people and companies.

Lourenço reported an increase in the number of mobile phone subscribers, which today stands at 25.7 million and internet users at 11.1 million.

“Through the “Conecta Angola” project, which uses the technological resources of the ANGOSAT-2 satellite, we are increasing the availability of internet access in remote areas,” explained the President of the Republic.

According to the Head of State, around 366,000 people in remote areas, in thirteen provinces of the country, already have this service at their disposal to enable all regions of the country to be connected.

João Lourenço spoke about the forthcoming implementation of the national broadband network project, underlining that the media continues to play a role of educating, informing and entertaining citizens.

The president considered it crucial the training of journalists for a media that is increasingly up to the challenges and aspirations of citizens, having highlighted the recent inauguration of the Journalist Training Center in central Huambo province.

He spoke of the expansion of the public television TPA Notícias channel, which represents an important contribution to better information for the public, following the investments that have been made to modernize Angolan Public Television.

“We are now working to implement the technological modernization and signal expansion program for the Angola National Radio,” said the president. AMC/OHA/TED/AMP
