Ndalatando – Some 273,756 inhabitants will benefit from drinking water in Ndalatando City, northern Cuanza-Norte Province, by 2030, after the completion of the Lucala and Lussue projects.

The Lucala river project, budgeted at US$22.6 million, will benefit 182k inhabitants, in Ndalatando, 21.5k, in Lucala, and 10.5k inhabitants, along the route of the pipeline to Ndalatando, totaling 215k consumers.

As part of the proposal for the Ndalatando Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan, the new system will debit 12,300 cubic meters into the system.

The one on the Lussue River, under construction since 2022, seven kilometers from Ndalatando, will deliver 200 cubic meters/hour, and supply 28k families in Ndalatando. It is budgeted at around 3 billion Kz (US$3.4 million).

The two undertakings will be connected to the current water systems of Fonte da Santa Isabel (built in the colonial period) and the Mucari river (opened in 2015).

The information was provided, on Tuesday, in this city, by the project director of the company Quantum Solution - Águas de Valencia, Manuel Roldá, during the presentation of the proposal for the Ndalatando Water Supply and Sanitation Master Plan.

According to the proposal, the plan will cover the main actions and guidelines for the medium and long term, in the field of supply to the provincial capital.

In the medium term, the plan is to cater for 273,756 inhabitants by 2030, ensuring 100% coverage and uninterrupted water supply.

In the long term, it is expected to benefit 410,421 inhabitants, by 2045, with the city's expansion in mind.

With a validity period of at least 20 years, 10 of which for capital investments, the plan focuses its approaches on demand, conventional and/or innovative technical solutions to ensure coverage in urban and semi-urban areas.

The preparation of the plan will cost around US$7 Million financed by the World Bank and is part of the Second Institutional Development Project for the Water Sector (PDISA II) of the Ministry of Energy and Water.

Speaking to the press, the municipal administrator of Cazengo, Fernandino Leitão, said that current supply coverage is estimated at around 28%, corresponding to 80k inhabitants.

Data from the 2014 General Population and Housing Census indicate that the city of Ndalatando (provincial seat) has an estimated population of 168,832 inhabitants.

He highlighted that the implementation of the aforementioned master plan and the completion of ongoing projects to reinforce the city's supply, could increase water coverage by around 86% of the population.

The city's supply is currently provided through a catchment installed on the Mucari River, which operates using a gravity system, with three reservoirs of 5,000 cubic meters and a supply of 250 cubic meters/hour.

It also has a collection source in Monte Redondo, capable of supplying around 6,000 cubic meters of water daily, which requires rehabilitation.
