Cuito - Without electricity for more than a year, the population of Cuanza commune, in the municipality of Camacupa, central Bié province, is eagerly awaiting the extension of power from the Kunje 1 hydroelectric scheme to this locality, for the well-being of the communities.

Speaking to ANGOP on Monday, the Kwanza communal administrator, Analdeth Jamba Baptista, said that the region is in the dark because of the breakdown of the only 100 KVA power generator.

She also said that they had received guarantees that a 25-kilometre transmission line would be extended later this year.

Rebuilt as part of the Integrated Municipal Intervention Plan (PIIM).

Municipalities (PIIM), the Camacupa dam was reopened last Tuesday (9 July) by the Minister of Energy and Water, João Baptista Borges. It has a capacity of 1.8 megawatts, up from 1.5 previously.

It will also benefit the municipality of Catabola.

When it materialises, she foresees improvements in the socio-economic life of the municipality.

She pointed to the extension of evening classes as possible gains, enabling more students to enter the education system, and the emergence of investors, among others.

During this time without power, the population has resorted to small generators, candles and lanterns.

She also pointed out that the situation, for example, is complicated at night in the only health centre, as inpatients survive on lanterns.

The commune has an estimated population of over 23,000 inhabitants. LB/PLB/DAN/DOJ
