Dundo – At least 15 people died in the province of Lunda-Norte, as a result of the torrential rains that fell in the region in the last two months.
The 2nd Provincial Commander of the Civil Protection and Fire Services in Lunda-Norte, Felismino Iambo, passed the details on Monday, when speaking to the press about the damage caused by the recent rains.
He explained that of the 15 deaths, 9 were caused by lightning, 3 by a falling of a tree and the same number by landslides.
He said that the phenomenon affected 231 homes, 198 of which suffered minor damage and the rest of the houses were destroyed, leaving families homeless.
He highlighted that the municipalities of Chitato, Cuango, Lucapa and Cambulo were the most affected by the recent heavy rains, as they had the largest number of people living in risk areas, despite successive awareness campaigns regarding the dangers of building in inappropriate areas.
He added that in Chitato alone, for example, there are more than 30 areas considered at risk and that today there are already constructions, calling on related bodies to be rigorous in combating this practice.
