Luanda - The Angola Online project, implemented by the Angolan government and partners, has made it possible to connect 4.5 million Internet users, the National Director of Telecommunications and Information Technology, Matias Borges, said Friday in Luanda.

According to the official, the government, together with public and private companies, has implemented a series of projects, such as Angola Online, which so far has 140 connection points.

Matias Borges represented the Angolan Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technology and Social Communication, Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira, at the celebration of the International Day of Education (January 24), whose theme is "educate to innovate, connect to transform".

The director cited several projects such as Ngola Digital, with 73 centers and several rooms equipped with computers and Internet, Conecta Angola, in 21 locations throughout the country, among others, that aim to guarantee access to Information Communication Technologies (ICT) for young people, helping to promote digital literacy and reduce the digital asymmetries that exist in society.

He reiterated that the government has held various technological events, highlighting ANGOTIC, the Girls and ICT Forums, Internet Governance, FITITEL, among others.

"That's why this year we're holding ANGOTIC 2025, with the theme 50 years to communicate, modernize and develop Angola, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of national independence, with topics of great interest such as connectivity, artificial intelligence, digital DNA, cybersecurity and creating trust in companies," said Borges.

According to him, information and communication technologies are important tools used around the world to facilitate communication in different sectors.

In education, he explained, ICT not only helps students and teachers with research, but also facilitates the delivery of content, access and processing of information in an innovative and remote way, occupying a central place in distance learning.

"They undoubtedly guarantee the integration of students outside the classroom and serve as a channel for communication and information exchange between teachers and students," he explained.

Eufrazina Zau, deputy director of the National Institute for the Training of Education Officials (INFQE), reiterated that the date was created to celebrate and raise awareness in society about education as an essential pillar for inclusive, quality opportunities and lifelong learning, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.

The UN theme for 2025 is "Artificial intelligence and education: preserving human autonomy in a world of automation".

The International Day of Education aims, among other things, to promote debate on education and digital inclusion in the teaching and learning process.

January 24 was declared the International Day of Education by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly adopted on December 3, 2018. It will be celebrated for the first time in 2019. AB/OHA/DAN/AMP
