Luanda - The Ministry of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women is creating the Angolan Gender Observatory to monitor the implementation of public policies aimed to promote equality between men and women.
The fact was expressed Friday, in Luanda, by the head of the sector, Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto, in her speech at the central event of the International Women's Day, which is celebrated today.
She detailed that this mechanism will monitor the degree of implementation of public policies in force in the country inherent to the promotion of gender equity and equality in alignment with national, regional and international principles.
It will also, She expressed that it also will monitor the compliance with the protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, the African agenda 2063, the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against women (CEDAW), the ILO conventions, the Objectives of Sustainable development 2030 and United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women Peace and Security.
Giving visibility to gender inequalities and facilitating the formulation of policies to integrate gender equality, as well as showing the impact of the results of actions developed by the state and measuring changes in the different dimensions of women's autonomy, are other purposes of the Observatory.
According to the official, the aim is also to make indicators and information on the situation of men and women in the country available to different government actors and society in general.
She stated, on the other hand, that Angola is experiencing a dynamic process of reconstruction and development, which is based on the situation of peace as a fundamental condition for achieving the recommended objectives and goals.
“The active and positive participation of men and women in this process has constituted important indicators for the perspective of sustainable development based on social justice, gender equity and the enhancement of human capital”, she highlighted.
According to the minister, the weight and significant importance of women in society demonstrates that all interventions to reduce poverty, promote growth, build and consolidate a governance model that respects human rights and promotes sustainable development is only achievable if issues of equity in gender relations are taken into account.
In her opinion, this fact is now recognized by the most diverse development actors in Angola.
The central event celebrating the 8th of March took place at Cine Atlântico, in the presence of hundreds of women from various social backgrounds.
From the 1960s, the celebration of March 8 had become traditional, but was officialized by the UN only in 1975, when this organization declared the international year of women, as an action aimed at combating inequalities and discrimination of gender around the world.
