Lubango – Most of the 223 patients admitted to medical treatment in Angola’s southern Huila province due to food poisoning caused by the consumption of allegedly contaminated cornmeal were discharged on Friday, while three of them are still in critical condition at the Central Hospital of the Lubango.
When updating the cases, the director of the Huíla Provincial Health Office, Paulo Luvangamo, said that so far only three, including two women, are hospitalized, as two of them tested positive for malaria and the other for neurological disorders.
“We have been considering the consumption of cornmeal since Thursday. All samples collected are in Humpata's laboratory and others went to Luanda today. We have to wait for the results to be sure what is going on,” he said.
According to the director, the company that sold the product is providing full support to the victims, including food and water, as well as cooperating with the investigation.
Paulo Luvangamo highlighted that the community, when it registered the first cases of poisoning, passed the message on to others not to consume cornmeal, and the epidemiological surveillance team, with the support of the Public Health department, is active to ensure better control of the disease situation.
