Addis Ababa - The chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Wednesday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia said that he was dismayed by the deterioration of the international situation in recent times, in which violence prevails as a means of resolving conflicts.

He was speaking at the opening of the 44th ordinary session of the AU Executive Council, dedicated to preparing the agenda for the 37th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the continental organisation, in which Angola is taking part with a delegation led by Foreign minister Téte António.

According to the Chadian diplomat at the service of the AU, the African and international situation continues, day after day, to cause worries, agonies, as well as bitterness.

In this regard, he questioned whether violence, in its most barbaric forms, is definitively establishing itself as the only means of resolving conflicts.

He considered it paradoxical and deeply shocking that the use of blind violence is accepted in silence and with the amnesia of almost all the world's great powers.

To him, the perpetrators of such serious denials display their crimes with condescension and contempt for the minimum requirements of international law and international humanitarian law.

He exemplified that the suffering of the Palestinian people, deprived of their fundamental rights to freedom and to the establishment of a viable and sovereign State, is aggravated towards our eyes taking into account the unprecedented war of extermination.

He reminded that in the first hours of these wars and unspeakable atrocities associated with these, the African Union called for a cessation of hostilities, the release of all hostages and prisoners and a resolute commitment to a political solution, based on the principle of two states.

Moussa Faki Mahamat reiterated that the states of Israel and Palestine must coexist, living in peace and respect for international law and the full security of the peoples of both sides and the entire region.

He affirmed that peace and security are possible with justice and the recognition of fundamental rights, praising the decision of the International Court of Justice and the firm commitment of the Republic of South Africa to the situation in Gaza.
