Outgoing IPU president praises Angola’s organization

Luanda – The outgoing president of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Duarte Pacheco, praised the Angolan government on Friday in Luanda for the excellent way the country organized the 147th General Assembly of the organization.

Duarte Pacheco made the statement at the closing ceremony of the event that brought together more than 1,500 delegates from 130 countries, who participated actively.

"On the first day, I said that we had confidence in your organization, and now I can say that we also have confidence in your achievement, because the preparation has been excellent," Pacheco said.

The politician added that throughout the event, the excellence of all the National Assembly staff had been confirmed, so that together with the IPU staff they could bring the work to a successful conclusion.

He recalled that in 2020, at the beginning of his mandate, he made a commitment that an Assembly of the organization would be held in a Portuguese-speaking country.

 "We are a community of brothers, I had this ambition, fortunately, today it is not a dream, it is a reality, we have hold this Assembly in Luanda," he said.

Pacheco emphasized that more than 1,500 participants from 130 countries, parliamentarians from all continents had travelled across the oceans to Luanda to take an active part in the IPU Assembly.

The politician highlighted the adoption of the Luanda Declaration, which highlights the active role of governance in the social version, recognizing the inseparable link between populations and institutions.

"Our role, as legislators and those responsible for overseeing the Executive, puts us in a unique position to champion forms of governance, ensure transparency and restore confidence in institutions," Pacheco said.

The 147th Assembly marked the end of Duarte Pacheco's term at the helm of the IPU.

He congratulated his successor, Tulia Ackson, on her election to the IPU's highest office.

"I'm sure she'll be a fantastic president because she has the strength, competence and professionalism of a woman in Africa," the Portuguese politician said. DC/VM/MRA/AMP
