AU prepares 37th Ordinary Session of Assembly of Heads of State and Government

Luanda - The African Union (AU) has been hosting the 47th Ordinary Session of the organisation's Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREP) since Monday, focusing on preparations for the 44th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 37th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, to be held from 14 to 18 February this year.

The agenda for the COREP meeting, which runs until the 26th of this month, involves several items proposed by the member states, most notably the presentation of the report on the 3rd Edition of the Pan-African Forum for the Culture of Peace and Non-Violence - Luanda Biennial, which took place from 22 to 24 November 2023.

 According to a press release from the Permanent Mission to the AU, in addition to the aforementioned item suggested by Angola, the event will consider the report of the joint session of the Subcommittee on General Oversight and Coordination of Budgetary, Administrative and Financial Issues and the Technical Experts of the Committee of Fifteen Finance Ministers (F15), among other documents.

 With the participation of Angola's Ambassador to Ethiopia and Permanent Representative to the AU and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Miguel Bembe, COREP will also analyse the reports of the specialised technical committees, namely from Education, Science and Technology, Agriculture, Rural Development, Water and the Environment, Communications and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment, and Justice and Legal Affairs.

 The session's agenda also includes the analysis of the report summary and roadmap for the 2024 theme "Training Africans for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems to increase access to inclusive, lifelong, quality and relevant learning in Africa" and the consideration of reports from the Commission and other AU bodies and specialised agencies.

 In this regard, the report on the African Union Transition Approach to Results-Based Management, the report of the Fourth Biennial Evaluation of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP), the Second Ten-Year Plan for the implementation of Agenda 2063, the AU Five-Year Strategic Plan and the Status of Implementation of Decisions, and the Revised AU Policy on Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) will be analysed.

 The analysis of the Draft Terms of Reference of the African Union Ministerial Committee Against Terrorism (AUMCAT), as well as the reports of the AU Commission on Elements of Migration in Africa, the Commission on the Humanitarian Situation in Africa, and the Continental Ten-Year Assessment of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development in Africa beyond 2014 (AADPD) are other items on the COREP agenda.

 Finally, the agenda of the session includes the analysis and adoption of the AU Strategic Action Plan for the Promotion and Protection of Human and Peoples' Rights in Africa, as well as the consideration of the activity reports of the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), including the results of the retreat held in March 2022 in the Tanzanian city of Arusha, the AU Advisory Board against Corruption (AUABC) and the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).
