Luanda - The secretary-general of the Union of Angolan Journalists, Teixeira Cândido, said in Luanda that Angola still has legislation that is not "favourable to press freedom.
Speaking to ANGOP on May 3, World Press Freedom Day, the trade unionist said that although there are functional instruments of self-regulation of the journalistic activity in the country, this fact still worries the journalists.
"It is clear that we are still not satisfied, because we still have legislation that is not very favourable to press freedom," he commented, referring to the issue of self-regulation of the sector.
From his point of view, it is important that the Angolan authorities decriminalise journalistic activity, for the sake of democracy and freedom of the press.
The new Angolan Criminal Code punishes crimes committed in the course of journalistic activity, such as insult, defamation and slander.
In another area, Teixeira Cândido said that the existence of functional instruments of self-regulation of journalistic activity, in Angola, was a hallmark of the Union of Angolan Journalists (SJA).
He defended that if Angola has today a more or less acceptable press legislation, it is a struggle of the trade union.
