Luanda – The diplomatic relations between Angola and Guinea Bissau “are favourable”, despite some obstacles in the agreements relating to the exploration of bauxite in the deep waters of Caio Port (G.Bissau), disclosed this Saturday the Guinean ambassador, in Luanda, Apolinário Mendes de Carvalho.

According to the diplomat, there are agreements yet to be materialised, manifesting his wish that such accords can soon be implemented.

Without revealing the volume of businesses between both countries, Apolinário Mendes de Carvalho said Guineans in Angola are mainly involved in trade and construction activities.

In turn, the Principal of the Angolan Lusíada University, Mário Pinto de Andrade, explained that the bilateral relations would be better if there were not such political constraints as those observed lately in Guinea Bissau.

The Angolan scholar highlighted the figure of Amílcar Cabral (late nationalist from Guinea Bissau) who is known as the “Father of the Independence” of this West African and Portuguese-speaking country and also of Cabo Verde, whose ideals and influence went across borders and stimulated the feeling of African liberation that brought about the independence of some former Portuguese colonies in the year 1975.

The two personalities were speakers at the conference on the impact of the liberation struggles for independence in the former Portuguese colonies, promoted by the Guinea Bissau Embassy in Angola, in the ambit of the West African country’s 50th independence anniversary, to be marked on 24th September.
