Ondjiva – Newborns at the new Cunene General Hospital “Simione Mucune” will have access to Civil Registration services, as part of the “Born with Identity” Programme.
The new unit, inaugurated on Friday by the President of the Republic, João Lourenço, has a civil registration and identity card issuing post, which has three computers and will be staffed by the same number of technicians, to register the children born in the maternity ward.
Speaking to ANGOP, on the sidelines of the Cunene General Hospital “Simione Mucune”, the provincial delegate for Justice and Human Rights in Cunene, Aldovino Mwaefelua, said that civil registration services are integrated into the ID card issuing system.
According to him, the aim is to cover all babies, so that they acquire the unique citizen number in the first days of life, even before they are discharged home.
He said that this is the first post of its kind in the province, but it will be extended to other hospitals with maternity services, to make it easier for children to have access to documents.
The 220-bed unit will provide several services, such as pediatrics, obstetrics, endoscopy, biology, ophthalmology, dentistry, emergency care, minor surgeries, X-rays, CT scans, hemodialysis, and psychiatry.
The province of Cunene has a health network made up of 161 health units, including six municipal hospitals, one missionary hospital, 44 centers, and 109 posts, totaling 1,941 beds.
The President of the Republic has been working in Cunene since Friday afternoon, where, in addition to the inauguration of the hospital, he will chair the meeting of the Local Government Council and visit the construction project for the Ndue dam. PEM/FA/LHE/ART/TED/DOJ
