Luanda - The Speaker of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, has been invited by her Cuban counterpart, Juan Lazo Hernández, to make an official visit to that country, as part of the historic relations between the two parliaments.

The information was given to the press on Thursday by the Cuban ambassador to Angola, Oscar León González, at the end of a meeting with the leader of the Angolan parliament Speaker.

According to the Cuban diplomat, Carolina Cerqueira's official visit to Cuba will be formalized in the near future through the relevant channels and that he discussed the experiences of both parliaments.

He praised the reception given to the President of Cuba, Miguel Dias Canel, at the National Assembly Palace, following his official visit to Angola in August 2023.

The Cuban diplomat, who considered relations between the two countries and peoples to be excellent and in the parliamentary sphere, said he has been informed about the meeting of the SADC Parliamentary Forum (FP-SADC) to take place in the Angolan capital (Luanda) in July.

Oscar León González informed about what is being done in Cuba, despite the difficulties arising from the US blockade to the Caribbean country.

According to the diplomat, this blockade, which has lasted for several years, is having a very negative effect on the Cuban people.

Angola's leadership in conflict mediation

The ambassador praised Angola's role in Africa, especially the active conflict mediation activity carried out by President João Lourenço to resolve the instability that persists on the African continent.

Angola and Cuba have excellent cooperation relations in various other areas, such as security, education, health, transport, public works, construction, oil, sport, culture, tourism and agriculture.

The two states established diplomatic relations on November 15, 1975, four days after Angola's independence, and a year later signed the General Cooperation Agreement, which gave rise to the Bilateral Commission.

Cuba, whose citizens poured their blood into the conquest and preservation of Angola's independence, has trained hundreds of Angolan staff at bachelor's, master's and doctoral level, helping it to fill the existing gaps in terms of staff shortages. DC/ART/DAN/AMP
