Washington – Angolan president João Lourenço Friday in Washington expressed his support for the demonstration of Angolan journalists.
This was during an interview with US radio station Voice of America (VOA), in Washington, United States.
Expressing his concern, João Lourenço said that the recent attacks on the headquarters of the Union of Angolan Journalists (SJA) aimed at discrediting his Government.
According to him, it was unthinkable that authorities would commit the “blunder ” of storming the Union headquarters.
He told VOA that his Government remains committed to the defence of journalists and freedom of expression, urging the authorities to conduct the proper investigation to determine who are responsible.
“Those responsible for this reprehensible action intend nothing more than to hold the Government responsible for it”, said the President, to whom “the Government has been the greatest defenders of journalists. We defend freedom of the press, freedom of expression”.
“It makes no sense for the Government to make a mistake as big as this”, underlined the Angolan President, adding that Saturday's demonstration, in protest against the robberies, “is welcome”.
"It is their right and they must, yes sir, demonstrate, to make the State feel the need to assume its responsibility to investigate this", said the President, also quoted by VOA as saying.
"This must already be done and I believe that the police are working on the matter", added João Lourenço.
