Luanda - Angolan President João Lourenço continued Thursday diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, in the face of the deterioration of the security situation in the east of the DRC.
A note from the Presidency of the Republic, obtained by ANGOP, states that after meeting his DRC counterpart, Félix Tshisekedi, in Luanda, the Head of State spoke by telephone with Presidents Paul Kagame (Rwanda) and Emmanuel Macron (France).
In these conversations, João Lourenço insisted on the need to preserve the achievements of the Luanda process, namely the ceasefire, the neutralization of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), the disengagement of troops and the withdrawal of the Rwandan armed forces from the territory of the DRC.
President João Lourenço was appointed by the African Union (AU) to mediate in the political, diplomatic and security crisis between the DRC and Rwanda.
It was emphasized that, despite the efforts of the mediation, only the goodwill and commitment of the parties will allow the process of pacification of the conflict to move forward, and that Angola will continue to make efforts to bring the conflicting parties closer together in order to defuse tensions and restore peace for the benefit of the suffering population.
