Catumbela - The Labour ministers of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) reiterated Thursday their commitment to eradicate child labour in the Member States.

The pledge is expressed in a statement released at the end of its fifteenth meeting, held in Catumbela municipality, coastal Benguela province.

The ministers said the intention aims to continue to contribute to the pursuit of the Sustainable Development objectives,  as part of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

However, the organisation will ensure the prohibition and elimination of the worst forms of child labour, including the recruitment and use of child soldiers by 2025.

It was also recommended to strengthen national development strategies and plans for the eradication of extreme poverty and the fight against social inequalities.

CPLP members reiterated their commitment to promoting social policies.

It includes active employment measures, mainly for young people, as well as extending universal social protection, gradually implementing national social protection floors, in line with the recommendation of the International Labor Organisation (ILO).

The Government of São Tomé and Principe, which will take over the Presidency of the CPLP in August 2023, was encouraged to pursue a community linkage that would allow for increased inter-sector cooperation among the Member States.

This measure is intended to reinforce the contribution of the CPLP to the implementation of Agenda 2030, for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063 of the African Union.
