Kigali – The Angolan Minister of Foreign Affairs Téte António said on Sunday in Kigali that there is political will on the part of the authorities of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo to comply with the ceasefire in the eastern region of the DRC.

The ceasefire in eastern DRC, which came into effect on August 4, was reached under Angolan mediation and aims to silence the guns in the conflict between the Congolese army and the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group.

Téte António was speaking to the press after the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, held a meeting in Kigali with his Rwandan counterpart, Paul Kagame, with whom he addressed issues related to the process of consolidating peace and security in the eastern DRC.

“I want to say that Rome was not built in a day, we know what a ceasefire is. We do know that there is a political will on the part of the parties. We will move slowly,' said the Angolan Minister, when asked about compliance with the ceasefire.

This is not the first ceasefire negotiated since the beginning of the conflict in 2021 between the Congolese army and the March 23 Movement rebellion, which has the support of Rwanda.

The foreign Minister said that the occasion also served for the two statesmen to review aspects related to cooperation between the two countries.

João Lourenço has been in Kigali since early afternoon today to attend the inauguration ceremony of the President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, who won the presidential elections held in that country in July. AFL/ART/DOJ
