Luanda – The regional summit for peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday ordered the stabilisation of the ceasefire in the eastern part of that country from 6pm on Friday, 25 October.

The information was provided by the President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, who is the peace process mediator, at the end of a meeting of statesmen and their representatives in the Angolan capital city.

João Lourenço said that the ceasefire will be followed by a cantonment of M23 forces, their disarmament and integration into Congolese society.

He said that it is a short step, but one of great significance.

João Lourenço also added that the process has a timetable that must be strictly complied with.

The Angolan statesman admitted the possibility of introducing changes to correct possible situations until definitive peace is achieved and relations between the DRC and Rwanda become normal.

A meeting held at the initiative of the Angolan President, had the participation of DRC President, Félix Tshisékédi, President of Burundi, Évariste Ndayishimiye, Rwandan Foreign Affairs minister, Vicent Biruta, as well as the former Kenyan head of state, Uhuru Kenyatta.

The meeting, which issued an ultimatum for the M23 withdrawal from the occupied zones in the east of the DRC, was also attended by the special representative of the AU Commission president, Michelle Ndiaye, the Executive Secretary of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), João Caholo, as well as the commander of the ad hod verification mechanism Lieutenant-General Nassone João.
