Lubango - Forty prisoners from the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and the National Police (PN) were released this Monday in Lubango city, southern Huíla province, under the Amnesty Law.
The 40 amnestied were serving sentences of less than eight years in prison for committing military crimes in their units, according to statement read by the presiding judge of the Military Court of the Southern Region, Colonel Ernesto Bento.
The Amnesty Law, approved on December 15, 2022 by the National Assembly, covers all common crimes with prison sentences of up to eight years.
It includes offences committed by national or foreign citizens in the period between November 12, 2015 and November 11, 2022.
Military crimes punishable with prison sentences of up to eight years will also be amnestied, except for intentional crimes committed with violence that resulted in death.
The perpetrators of the crimes not covered by the Law and who have been convicted by a final decision will have their sentences pardoned in 1/4.
The Law excludes, among others, intentional crimes committed with violence, money laundering, corruption and embezzlement, trafficking in people and weapons and aiding illegal immigration.
The Law aims to ensure that the celebrations of the 47th anniversary of National Independence is reflected in the established social order, without excluding citizens deprived of liberty, granting them new political, social and social and family reintegration opportunities.
