Addis Ababa – The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, manifested this Saturday, in Addis Ababa, his confidence in the commitment and dedication of the new acting president of the African Union (AU), Mohamed Al-Ghazouani, to the “great causes of Africa”.
João Lourenço was speaking on the first day of the 37th ordinary summit of the AU, which marked the handover from the outgoing president, Azali Assoumani, of the Union of Comoros, to the Head of State of Mauritania as the new president of the organization, at the same time as chairman of the AU Assembly meetings.
On the same occasion, Angola assumed the role of 1st vice-president of the AU Assembly Bureau for a one-year term that will serve to prepare its candidacy for the AU presidency for 2025.
In his intervention, the Angolan President declared himself convinced that the AU will benefit, during Al-Ghazouani's mandate, from his “dynamism and dedication to the great causes of Africa, the development and consolidation of democracy, peace and of the security of our continent”.
Wishing him good work and “much success”, João Lourenço said he made himself available, as President of the Republic of Angola and first vice-president of the AU Assembly, to contribute to the good performance and success of his mission.
At the same time, he congratulated the outgoing president “for the assertive and committed way in which he led the AU in a critical period full of uncertainties” arising from the security crises that the world is experiencing.
He said he is convinced that the work carried out during 2023 will be crucial so that we can take important steps towards the growth of our organization and the development of the African continent.
