Luanda – President João Lourenço returned this Sunday to Angola, after attending in the Democratic Republic of São Tomé & Príncipe the fourteenth summit of Heads of State and Government of the Portuguese language community (CPLP).
At Luanda’s "4 de Fevereiro International Airport", sided by the First Lady, Ana Dias Lourenço, the Angolan Head of State was welcomed back home by the Vice President, Esperança da Costa, and by members of his executive.
During the summit, Angola handed over the CPLP presidency to São Tomé & Príncipe.
In the opening ceremony of the event, João Lourenço defended a more dynamic co-operation among the CPLP member states and reaffirmed the need to make the organisation more active.
Meanwhile, the Angolan statesman was awarded, by the CPLP, the José Aparecido de Oliveira Prize (Eur 30,000) for his "unique contribution to the international projection of the CPLP, especially the implementation of the Agreement on Mobility among the Member States of the CPLP" and "the creation of the CPLP's new general objective of economic cooperation".
On the occasion, the Angolan President announced that he is going to donate the said prize to the Angolan Youth Association of Support to Underprivileged Young People (JUCARENTE).
JUCARENTE is an Angolan social solidarity institution that works in Luanda’s municipalities of Cacuaco, Belas and Quissama in favour of social causes.
During the debate on “Young people and sustainability in the CPLP”, João Lourenço reasserted the key role of the youth in the progress of CPLP member states and its growth.
The Summit of Heads of State and Government is the highest body of the CPLP and has the power to define and guide the organisation's general policy and strategies.
Founded on July 17, 1996, the organisation groups Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor.
