Luanda - Emerging issues that affect gender equality and women's empowerment will be at the center of the 68th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), in which Angola participates, from the 11th to the 22nd of this month, in New York.

The Angolan delegation to the event is headed by the Minister of Social Action, Family and Promotion of Women, Ana Paula do Sacramento Neto, and includes the Secretaries of State for Foreign Affairs and Public Administration, respectively, Esmeralda Mendonça and Amélia Varela.

A note from the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations that ANGOP had access to today indicates that, for two weeks, the annual session will bring together representatives of the 193 UN Member States, parliamentarians, non-governmental organizations, civil society and entities from the UN.

Ana Paula do Sacramento has two interventions planned on the first day of work (11), one on behalf of SADC and the other national representation.

Under debate will be progress and gaps in the implementation of the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the main global political document on gender equality, and the 23rd Extraordinary Session of the General Assembly, held in 2000 (Beijing+5), as well as emerging issues affecting gender equality and women's empowerment.

“Accelerating the achievement of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, combating poverty and strengthening institutions and financing with a gender perspective”, is the central theme that will guide the work of CSW 68”, by according to the document.

The session includes a ministerial segment, which aims to reaffirm and strengthen the policies' commitment to promoting gender equality and parity, the empowerment of women and girls, as well as their human rights, and ensuring high-level engagement and visibility of the Commission's deliberations.

In this context, in parallel with the ministerial segment, the meeting foresees the holding of four round tables to exchange experiences, share lessons learned and good practices.

The Angolan delegation also includes the Permanent Representative of Angola to the United Nations, Francisco da Cruz, as well as senior officials from this Mission and various ministerial departments.

The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is the leading global intergovernmental body dedicated exclusively to promoting gender equality and empowering women.

This is a functional commission of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), created by ECOSOC resolution 11(II) of June 21, 1946.

CSW is instrumental in promoting women's rights, documenting the realities of women's lives around the world and shaping global standards on gender equality, parity and women's empowerment. VC/DOJ
