Addis Ababa – Angolan head of State João Lourenço Friday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, attended the meeting of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council, which reviewed the situation in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
The meeting, which was attended by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, the chairperson of the AU Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, was convened by South Africa in its capacity as President of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of AU for the month of February.
The deteriorating security situation in eastern DRC requires urgent attention from the African Union (AU) and its Peace and Security Council, in particular based on their mandate to promote peace and stability in Africa.
At the end of the special session, held on the sidelines of the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the AU, which opens on Saturday in Addis Ababa, the participants did not speak to reporters.
The journalists are restricted to a final communiqué that will be released on Saturday.
Earlier, President João Lourenço, who presides over the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), and African Union (AU) mediator in the crisis between Rwanda and the DRC, chaired a meeting, also focused on the situation in East of the DRC.
