Luanda – Angola’s President João Lourenço contribution to maintaining peace and security in the southern African region was praised Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal during a meeting between the Angolan ambassador to that country, Adão Pinto, and his counterpart from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Christophe Muzungu.

The Congolese diplomat praised the efforts of the Angolan Head of State for his commitment to achieving peace in the east of the DRC.

Christophe Muzungu praised Angola's investments in the Lobito Corridor, which covers the mining areas of the DRC and Zambia, describing it as a source of development, given the huge impact the railway infrastructures have.

According to a statement issued by the Angolan embassy, the two diplomats discussed aspects of common interest in the field of diplomacy, namely the recognition of the good bilateral relations between the two countries.

The Extraordinary Summit of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) on the security situation in the eastern region of the DRC held in the Angolan capital, Luanda, on Saturday, with the presence of the region's Heads of State, as well as the forthcoming presidential elections scheduled for December in DRC, was also in the center of the issues discussed.

Ambassador Adão Pinto highlighted the strategic importance of Angola and the DRC in strengthening ties of friendship and cooperation, underlining the existing brotherhood and the strategic capital of the values of unity in the current global context.

Bilateral cooperation between Angola and the DRC, which are countries that share a vast land, sea and river border, has its legal framework based on the General Agreement on Economic, Scientific and Cultural Cooperation signed in 1978.

The two states currently cooperate in various sectors, including trade and industry, energy and water, transport, defence and security, among others.   VIC/MRA/AMP
