Luanda - Former representative to the United Nations Ismael Martins on Tuesday highlighted Angola's role in the creation and development of the Community for the Development of the Southern Africa (SADC).
The Angolan capital will host, from the 7th to the 17th of this month, the 43rd Summit of SADC Heads of States and Governments, during which Angola will assume the rotating presidency of the organization.
Speaking to Angola’s public broadcasting radio, he stressed that Angola continues playing a decisive role in its growth of SADC, 31 years later after its proclamation.
For the diplomat, “if there is a country that gave strength to the need for a SADC, it is Angola”, adding that it is the right time for the country to assume the rotating Presidency of the organization, since it is in a restructuring and strengthening phase of its economy.
“It is important to assume the rotating presidency at this stage to transmit this confidence to other state members so that it can grow and become the most important region on the continent”, he highlighted.
Ismael Martins also highlighted the fact that, currently, there are several countries in the region facing political-military crisis, that’s why Angola must transmit confidence to the rest of SADC.
The ambassador highlighted the fact that Angola has always had peace and security at the center of its agenda, as it is a country that has lived through a long period of war and managed to achieve peace through its own initiatives and effort.
Created on October 17, 1992, SADC is of great importance for the economic development of the region, as well as for its political stability.
