Luanda - A delegation from the Angolan Institute of Electoral Systems and Democracy (IASED), which coordinates the Angolan Electoral Observatory (OBEA), is from Sept 10 to 12, in the Summit on Electoral Integrity in Africa 2024, which takes place in the city of Kampala (Uganda).
According to the institution's note to which ANGOP had access, the event's main motto is the Strengthening of Electoral Transparency, Public Supervision and Collaborative Reforms.
During the event, the IASED executive director, member of the Electoral Support Network for Southern Africa (ESN-SA), Luís Jimbo, will talk about electoral monitoring mechanisms to ensure that electoral observation mission recommendations are effectively implemented and monitored, promoting continuous improvement in electoral processes in each cycle.
During the Summit, the African Election Observation Network (AfEONet), called AHEAD AFRICA, will be established, a pan-African project that aims to empower civil society, including citizen observers, to strengthen electoral systems and processes in African Union member states.
It will use an AHEAD approach - Action for a Holistic Electoral Approach to Democracy - which emphasizes monitoring the recommendations of electoral observations to boost inclusive electoral systems, build public trust and prevent conflicts.
The Summit will be a room for dialogue, coordination and collaboration between civil society organizations, citizen electoral observer groups and other parties interested in electoral observation and monitoring to increase electoral integrity.
It is also an opportunity to highlight the importance of democratic processes and integrity in elections across Africa, essential for the consolidation of democracy, peace, security, and stability on the continent.
During the event, the International Democracy Day, dated Sept 15, will also be celebrated.
AHEAD AFRICA is a consortium made up of election observation and democracy support networks such as the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD), Alliance for Finance Monitoring (ACFIM), the secretariat of the African Election Observation Network (AfEONET) and the Zimbabwe Electoral Support Network (ZESN), as secretariat of the Electoral Support Network for Southern Africa (ESN-SA).
It is also part of the Constitutional and Reform Education Consortium (CRECO), as the Eastern secretariat, and the Horn of African Election Observer Network (E-HORN), Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), as the secretariat of the West African Election Observer Network (WAEON), AfricTivistes and Democracy Reporting International (DRI).
The Angolan Electoral Observatory (OBEA) is a coalition of national NGOs and churches, based in the 18 provinces, being a national platform for efforts combination between the organizations and associations that comprise it, within the scope of tasks linked to electoral civic education, electoral observation and monitoring, having participated in electoral observation missions in the 2012, 2017 and 2022 Angola's general elections.
