Addis Ababa - The Executive Council of the African Union (AU) begins, Wednesday, in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), the preparation of the agenda for the 37th ordinary summit of heads of state and government, taking place from the 17th to the 18th of February.

The information was confirmed Tuesday by the Angolan ambassador to Ethiopia and permanent representative to the AU, Miguel Bembe, in statements to the press in the Ethiopian capital.

According to the Angolan diplomat, preparation work for the summit of heads of state began at the level of the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREP), made up of African ambassadors accredited in Addis Ababa.

The work sessions of this Committee, which began last January and lasted until Tuesday, the 13th, culminated in the preparation of the agenda and draft decisions of the Executive Council, he explained.

The election of ten new members of the AU Peace and Security Council (CPS), including Angola, and the analysis of the AU's participation modalities and priorities in the Group of 20 emerging countries (G20) are among the points on the Executive Council's agenda.

In this its 44th ordinary session, the body that brings together the heads of diplomacy of the AU member countries will also focus on preparations for the election of a new leadership of the AU Commission, in February 2025.

According to the meeting program consulted by ANGOP, in Addis Ababa, the agenda of African heads of diplomacy is also filled with analysis of reports, proposals and draft strategies presented by the different bodies and member states of the continental organization.

Among the documents submitted for analysis are a report on the institutional reform of the AU, presented by Rwanda, and another proposed by Angola on the Luanda Biennale. IZ/VIC/DOJ
