Addis Ababa - Comoros will take over the rotating presidency of the African Union (AU) for 2023, during the organisation's 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
This will be the first time the island will perform its duty, after Kenya decided to withdraw its candidacy.
President Azali Assoumani and his Kenyan counterpart, William Ruto, lobbied separately for the top job, but after a meeting held on the sidelines of the US-Africa summit, which took place in Washington in December 2022, Kenya eventually withdrew.
In a statement made recently, the president of Comoros thanked Kenya, saying that the decision showed "Nairobi's commitment to promoting unity and stability in the East African region".
Angolan head of State João Lourenço, is also expected to be among the participants in the 36th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, which starts Saturday, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The Angolan statesman, "Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation", arrived Thursday in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.
Angolan Head of State has scheduled audiences with different personalities in Addis Ababa.
Senegal's Head of State, Macky Sall, is the current President of the African Union (AU).
