Malanje - At least 8.6 million square metres of land were cleared of landmines in 2020, in Malanje province, by brigades assigned to the provincial executive commission of demining, aiming at the implementation of projects included in the Integrated Plan of Intervention in Municipalities (PIIM).
The demined areas will be used to build two administrative complexes in the municipalities of Marimba and Cunda Dia-Base, two primary and secondary schools in Cangandala, a shipyard in Malanje, and the electricity transmission line in Cacuso.
According to the final statement from the plenary meeting to discuss mine action, held Thursday, during the period in question the mine clearance teams removed and destroyed 55 anti-personnel mines, 12 anti-tank mines, 293 non-detonated explosive devices as well as 8,71 rounds of ammunition of various calibres.
The document adds that during the period, the brigades of the National Demining Institute (INAD), the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA) and the Security House of the President of the Republic (CSPR), which did not register any accidents, carried out several awareness raising campaigns about the risk of landmines.
For this year, the demining of 65 areas is planned, in 10 of the 14 municipalities of Malanje province, for the installation of electricity projects, road construction, dwellings, among others.
