Luanda - The Angolan Parliament on Sunday highlighted the commitment of Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento in the combination of efforts to promote dialogue and pacification in Angola.

In a note sent to ANGOP, the Angolan Parliamentary Community highlights the nationalism of the prelate who leaves a legacy marked by his contribution to the struggle for national liberation, independence and the end of the Angolan civil conflict, making him an example to be followed by the new generations.

The note of condolences expresses the pain and consternation of the parliamentary community that highlights his long journey of serving the country and the Catholic Church.

As one of the “moral reserves of Angolan society”, the note continues, the religious marked his vocational trajectory associated with Angola's policy under colonial rule, striving for the social well-being of Angolans.

“Humanist and skilled diplomat, with his death the country loses one of its excellent sons, humble, tireless, loyal friend and companion at all times, whose name is inscribed in the history of Angolan nationalism”, reads the note.

In this hour of pain and mourning, the Angolan Parliamentary Community bows to his memory, addressing the family with the deepest feelings of regret, the document concludes.

Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento died Saturday in Luanda, victim of illness, at the age of 99.

Born on March 1, 1925 in Malanje, Dom Alexandre Cardeal do Nascimento became a bishop in 1975.

The name of the only and first Cardinal of the Episcopal Conference of Angola is associated with the political community, the creation of the Catholic University of Angola and the reopening of Radio Ecclésia, the Catholic Broadcaster of Angola. HDC/DOJ
