Luanda - The Angolan government summoned Friday in Luanda, the chargé d'affaires of the Gabonese Embassy in the country, Wilfrid Mundungue, for explanations about the vandalization that occurred in the house of the head of the Economic Community of Central African States (CEEAC), the Angolan Gilberto Veríssimo.
According to a press release from the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MIREX), the Angolan government was informed Thursday about a break in by armed men (some wearing Gabonese armed forces uniforms) on the official residence of the president of the Commission of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS).
Official reports indicate that they psychologically harassed Ambassador Gilberto Veríssimo and his assistant, who were inside the residence.
As a result of this diplomatic accident, the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça, on behalf of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Téte António, strongly repudiated what has happened and demanded clear explanations from the Gabonese authorities as for the real reasons for it.
Angola expresses deep sadness at what has happened and, through the Chargé d'Affaires of the Gabonese Embassy, called for severe measures to be taken against the offenders who put at risk the safety and physical integrity of the Angolan diplomat who is officially on duty in that country.
On August 30, 2023, the Gabonese government suffered a military-led coup that ousted re-elected President Ali Bongo.
Recently, the 5th Extraordinary Session of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of ECCAS, within the framework of the Council for Peace and Security in Africa (COPAX), expressly called on the new authorities to continue to guarantee the security conditions of the President, the members of the Commission and all their staff.FMA/VIC /MRA/AMP
