Luanda – The Head of State, João Lourenço, held a meeting this Thursday with representatives of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for African Issues, addressing aspects related to peace and security in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

They are the representatives of the United Nations Secretary General for Central Africa, Abdou Abarry, the head of the UN Regional Office For Central Africa (UNOCA), Valentine Rugwabiza, and the head of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), Bintu Keita, as well as the UN Secretary-General special envoy for the Great Lakes Region, Huang Xia.

 

Speaking to the press at the end of the aforementioned audience, Abdou Abarry said that the meeting with President João Lourenço served to assess the situation in the Southern and Central Africa regions.

 

Mr. Abarry highlighted the fact that Luanda capital city has been an important hub for decisions about the region and the continent in general.

 

For Niger's diplomat, the United Nations recognises Angola´s efforts, under the guidance of President João Lourenço, to seek peace in the Central African region.

 

The senior UN official expressed at the time, on behalf of the organisation, full support for the Angolan government in the search for peaceful solutions for the Great Lakes.

 

Abdou Abarry expressed his optimism regarding the peaceful closing of the prevailing conflict between DRC and Rwanda borders.

 

The Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço, granted this audience after the holding of the Luanda Mini-Summit on peace and security in the Eastern Region of the DRC.
