Luanda – Angolan and Algerian permanent representatives to the United Nations analyzed Tuesday in the headquarters of this international organization, in New York, the need for adequate funding to face the growing challenges of terrorist threats and violent extremism in the African continent.

During the meeting, Angolan ambassador Francisco da Cruz and his Algerian counterpart, Amar Bendjama, highlighted the top priority issues on the agenda of the two countries, namely, the pillar of peace and security and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

Regarding peace and security, the diplomats took the opportunity to review the incidences of the United Nations High Level Conference on Counter Terrorism, having agreed on the need to implement the decisions of the 16th Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union Terrorism and Unconstitutional Changes of Government held in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

According to a note that reached ANGOP, the two diplomats highlighted the priorities of both countries at the United Nations, underscoring the need to continue cooperating in the defence of common interests and a greater coordination in the definition of priorities between the African Group, in New York, and the African Union Commission.

Friendship and cooperation between Angola and Algeria date back to the period of struggle for independence of Angola, in which diplomatic, material and military support from the North African country was crucial.

In the post-independence period, Algeria supported Angola in the training of the first Angolan cadres, especially in the oil sector.FMA/VM/Amp/jmc
