Luanda - The National Assembly (parliament) Speaker, Carolina Cerqueira, reaffirmed, on Wednesday, the institution’s commitment to promoting and preserving the culture of peace.

In a message made official within the framework of World Peace Day, which takes place on Wednesday, Jan 1, Carolina Cerqueira states that the parliament associates itself with all initiatives of the international community to promote peace and the culture of peaceful resolution of conflicts.

"This date coincides with the beginning of a New Year, in which the parliamentary community, in particular, and Angolans in general are entrusted with the mission to make efforts and launch initiatives to promote harmony and peace as paths to the development of the country and the well-being of communities", the message reads.

For the National Assembly Speaker, peace is the safest path to sustainable development, to achieving equity and justice among people.

She considered parliamentary diplomacy to be an instrument that promotes the culture of peace, the peaceful resolution of conflicts and the strengthening of institutional ties and democracy, asserting itself as the universal tool for achieving effective peace between Nations through dialogue, and building bridges of understanding.

"Our Constitution defines the Republic of Angola as a nation dedicated to peace and that respects the dignity of the human person", she stressed.

In Carolina Cerqueira's view, as legislators and legitimate representatives of Angolans, deputies must promote the culture of peace, in the search for answers to the challenges that the global situation poses.

For this reason, parliamentarians from all over the world, together, seek to find alternative forms of action, complementing the action of governments through concerted efforts and permanent advocacy in favor of peaceful coexistence, solidarity and harmony between Nations.

Within the framework of parliamentary advocacy, Carolina Cerqueira reaffirms and elevates the sacred value of peace, which must be understood in any and all circumstances as a "sine qua non" condition for human and sustainable development, stability, security and protection of the most vulnerable populations.

World Peace Day, initially called simply Peace Day, is celebrated on January 1st, having been created by Pope Paul VI in 1967.
