Luanda - The Angolan writer Nituecheni Africano received the ‘Fox Usa 2024’ award Monday in New York, United States of America, for his work entitled “O recluso - o princípio e o fim de uma injustice” (‘The Prisoner - The Beginning and End of an Injustice).

During the gala, the writer received 16,000 dollars as a prize, as well as two distinctions, namely ‘Best crime novel’ and ‘Best young contemporary author in Africa’.

Speaking to ANGOP, Nituecheni Africano expressed his satisfaction with the opportunity to sell around 1,500 copies of his book in less than two hours and that a California company dedicated to the film industry intends to produce a film based on the book.

The 150-page book, subdivided into 12 chapters, was launched in July 2023 in Portugal, at the headquarters of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP) and the Angolan House of Culture in Lisbon.

The literary work tells the story of a young lawyer who is faced with a high-profile case in Angola, where justice seems to obscure the truth.

According to the plot, by showing courage and sagacity during the trial, the protagonist stands out as a defender of human rights, tackling issues of abuse of power, influence peddling and money laundering, which reflect contemporary African reality.

The ‘FOX US2024’ literary prize is an initiative of the US film company FOX held annually in New York City, which aims to honor novel works, with the participation of more than 100 writers from around the world.

The writer's career

With a degree in Computer Science and Business Administration from the Technical University of Angola (UTANGA), Nituecheni Africanno was born in central Huambo province on September 12, 1990.

The writer is one of three Angolans on the list of the 50 most prominent cultural figures on the African continent, honored by the French magazine ‘Le Point’ in  2023.

The author has published four literary works, namely ‘The Prisoner of Love’, ‘The Winner with Bread in His Hands’, both in 2020, ‘The Web Emigrant and His Nonsense’ (2022) and ‘The Prisoner: The Beginning and the End of an Injustice’ (2023).

His career has been marked by five international literary prizes, including best novel at the 2nd and 4th editions of the WBR in Latin America, as well as the ‘Literary Reference’ prize in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) in 2023 for his work ‘The Web Emigrant and His Nonsense’.AMC/MCN/DAN/AMP
