Luanda - Angola was elected Wednesday member of the Executive Board of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) for 2022-2026.

The election took place at the 41st General Conference of UNESCO held in Paris, France.

 

Among the main goals, Angola is expected to focus on UNESCO’s agenda and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for the sustainable development.

 

The country is also expected to work on promotion of the issues related to the Africa and contribute to development of major programmes linked to the History of Africa, encouraging the recovery of cultural assets of the African countries.

 

The goals include support and work on organisation’s strategy for the technology innovation in education (2021-2025), mainly in African continent, actively contributing to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Continental Strategy on Education.

 

The agenda covers the promotion of peace and security through cultural events, such as the Luanda Biennial, encouraging the increase of the classification of cultural goods likely to become Immobile Cultural Heritage and strengthen the protection of ecological integrity and the wetland conservation, encouraging the classification of those sites as World Heritage.

 

In its press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MIREX) states that while submitting its application for the election, Angola made clear the importance it attaches to UNESCO.

 

The document stressed the country’s availability to continue making efforts to help the oragnisation achieves its objectives, with stress to the gender equality as well as Agenda 2030 of the United Nations and 2063 of the African Union and the spirit of the Maputo Protocol (2005).
