Luanda – Angolan capital, Luanda, needs at least 4,898 teachers for general education, to enable the integration of one million children who are currently outside of the education system, the local governor Manuel Homem said Monday.

According to the governor, who was speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 855 new teachers, Luanda province has a total of 28,122 teachers, which is not enough to cover the demand.

The governor added that the government will continue to hire staff in the education sector to cover the demand, underlining that in 2018 2,650 teachers were hired.

According to the governor, a total of 130 teachers were also hired in 2018, while in 2020 and 2021, in the first and second phases, an overall 810 teachers, in addition to 699 cleaning assistants entered the education sector.

"Although the picture presented is one of growth, we still have challenges, especially the need for another 4,898 teachers. The government has been making efforts in the face of the economic landscape to keep regular public tenders, hence our appeal to you to avoid the bad practices that still plague our system. Be examples of change and transmit only values," the governor said.

Manuel Homen defended the need for revitalization of the project "Zero sexual vulnerability in schools", which aims to combat harassment and sexual involvement between teachers and pupils in educational institutions, stressing that this phenomenon has caused early pregnancies, bullying, school drop-outs and family breakdown.

During the ceremony, 728 primary school teachers and 127 secondary school teachers, who were admitted during the 2023 public tender, started working.

Luanda province has a total of 4,302 schools at different levels of education, of which 792 are public and 3,510 private, for more than 119,000 pupils, 20,344 of whom have entered the education system for the first time.LIN/MCN/AMP
