Lubango - The Bank of Commerce Industry (BCI) and the University of Mandume Ya Ndemufayo (UMN) celebrated today, in Lubango, Huíla province, an agreement aimed at offering scholarships to students with the best academic performance in Law and Medicine, Economics and Agronomy courses.

The initiative, to be effective next academic year, will focus on BCI's social responsibility and promote academic excellence with the support of several leading public and private higher education institutions in Angola.

In statements to the press, on the sidelines of the event, the chairman of the board of directors of the BCI, Pedro Luís da Fonseca, said that the initiative runs within the scope of two instruments of management and development of the country -to improve the quality of higher education.

According to the manager, the award of scholarships is a contribution that the BCI intends to lend in support of achieving two objectives set by the Government and contribute to the sustainable development of the country.

He pointed out that the initiative “visa rewards students of merit”, because the country has people of excellence and university is the “most conducive” environment to produce leadership and the best images that can guarantee wealth and social well-being.

Without advancing the value of being funded at Universidade Mandume Ya Ndemufayo, I knew that every year the BCI will support 200 students.

For his part, the rector of UMN, Sebastião António, thanked the initiative of the BCI, because it will mark an “important” point in the life of the institution and open paths for students, particularly, those of merit.

He highlighted that it is the first instrument that UMN has signed with a banking entity that is willing to contribute to the formation of human capital.

It is a memorandum, which according to the manager, will cover the faculties of Medicine, Law, Economics and the Polytechnic Institutes of Huíla and Ondjiva. In the current academic year, more than eight thousand students are enrolled at UMN. BP/MS/DOJ
