Luanda - Angolan state oil company Sonangol and partners are investing US$83.7 million in two renewable energy projects in southern Angola (Huila and Namibe), with production expected to be on the public grid by 2022.
The projects are being built in the regions of Quilemba (Huila, with funding of US$36.7 million) and Caraculo (Namibe, with US$37 million), in partnership with companies Eni (Italy) and Total (France), according to Sebastião Gaspar Martins.
The chairman of the board of directors of Sonangol explained that photovoltaic renewable energy projects were being installed in the two regions with a capacity of 37 megawatts (in Quilemba) and 25 megawatts (in Caraculo), respectively.
Speaking at the Forum on "Business Opportunities in Angola in the Mining, Oil and Gas fields," he explained that for the Caraculo project, in partnership with Eni, a further 25 megawatts may be added in its second phase, making a total of 50 megawatts.
Meanwhile, the manager clarified, with the partnership of Total, the Quilemba project (Huila) may increase to 80 megawatts.
"If everything goes according to what we are predicting, in 2022 we will have the first renewable energy production in those two projects," Gaspar Martins said during Friday's event for diplomats.
