Luanda - The deputy director of the National Secretariat for the Implementation of the Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (ITIE), Beatriz Catomi, defended yesterday, Monday, in Luanda, the country's greater investment in human capital and alignment of its practices with transparency standards in the sector.

Speaking at the workshop on the impact on the mining sector in implementing this initiative, addressed to Endiama employees, Beatriz Catomi highlighted that, after Angola's accession last year, it is necessary to continue to align processes in the area dedicated to extraction and transformation of natural resources.

The EITI initiative aims to adopt the standard of good governance in the extractive sector, seeking better practice and good management of resources from the extractive sector.

He mentioned that the extractive industry publishes its information through financial reports, in the Angolan newspaper and on its websites, “but in order to meet the transparency requirement it needs to publish more”.

On the occasion, Endiama's executive director, Laureano Receado, made it known that the company has been working to increase the level of transparency, persuading actors to understand “how important the participation of Minas Gerais companies in this process is”.

He considers that the implementation of the project has a great impact, as it allows everything that is done in the production chain to be publicized, making the sector increasingly known.

Angola submitted its report on good governance and transparency in the extractive sector, in December 2023, to the organization that preliminarily evaluated the document.

The pre-validation of the first international report identified, among the main gaps, the lack of information on contracts and beneficiary data as impediments to its final approval.

The EITI is a global initiative that promotes transparency and accountability in the management of mineral resources in more than 50 countries and has been instrumental in Angola in ensuring that the country's mineral resources are used for the benefit of the entire population. HM/VC/CF/DOJ
