Luanda – The Angolan government reiterates its ongoing commitment to promoting public policies for social inclusion to guarantee basic rights, so that each citizen can have adequate housing, making cities and communities stronger, inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

According to the Ministry of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing, the sector is also focused in the promotion, preparation and approval of territorial planning instruments, orderly and harmonious development of the territory, as well as sustainable urban growth, with a view to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Ministry's declaration falls within the framework of World Habitat Day, which takes place on Monday, and ends with World Cities Day, which takes place on October 31st.

In a note to which ANGOP had access on Monday, the governmental department states that Angola, as a member of the Executive Council of UN-Habit, is aware of its international responsibilities, with emphasis on the commitments made to Angolans in working together and creating more opportunities for families to have healthier homes, respecting human dignity and the environment.

Therefore, the ministry encouraged social partners, professionals in the sector and Angolans, in general, to create more synergies, in order to continue promoting a healthier and more harmonious urban future for all citizens.

This year, to mark World Habitat Day, also called “Urban October”, Angola will promote lectures, training actions, programs to reinforce the sector's institutional communication, activities to improve the urban environment, visits to public and private urbanizations, seminars on spatial planning, urban planning and housing, among other activities.

The United Nations Human Settlements Program, UN-Habitat, is a specialized UN agency that has promoted Urban October annually since 2014, with days of reflection around cities and human settlements.

For the current year, UN-Habitat has pledged for World Habitat Day the motto "Engaging youth to create a better urban future", while World Cities Day has as its motto "Youth leading climate and local action for cities."
