Angolans beat national records in swimming world championship

Luanda - Two national records, the first in the men's 50m backstroke, obtained by Yusseni Furtado, and another in the women's 100m freestyle, by Nyriam Morais were the highest points of the National Swimming Team at the World Championship, which ended on Sunday. , in Lima (Peru).

Yusseni Furtado, athlete of 1º de Agosto, beat  the national record with a time of 28.57, while Nyriam Morais, from the Náutico club, performed the feat with a time of 01:03.60. The previous record of the 50m backstroke belonged to Márcio Fernandes (outside competitions) of 28.94, obtained in 2016, in a competition held in Luanda.

In the 100m freestyle, the record was held by Catarina Sousa with 01:04.83, timed in Zimbabwe. Alex Fortes (male) and N`hara Fernandes (female) completed the squad that competed in the Lima event. This is the debut of the four members in a competition of the genre within the framework of a federative project to obtain the minimums for the 2028 Olympic Games.

In a universe of 32 competing countries, the World Championship was won by Japan, with seven gold, eight silver and four bronze medals, followed by Hungary, with seven gold, also a silver number. Poland came in third, with seven gold, one silver and six bronze.

 

South Africa were the only African representative present in the medal table, appearing in ninth place, with one gold, three silver and one bronze, while Portugal were the best Portuguese-speaking country by achiving seventh place with three gold medals.
